Flare-up
VA Terminology Definition
Plain English Definition
A period when your symptoms are significantly worse than usual. These 'bad days' are important for your rating.
Why This Matters
Examiners must ask about flare-ups and estimate how they affect your function. Don't just describe your average day - describe your WORST days, as these count for your rating.
Example
Your knee normally hurts at a 4/10, but during flare-ups (2-3 times per month), pain is 8/10 and you can barely walk. The examiner should document this and estimate ROM during flare-ups.
