Apportionment
VA Terminology Definition
Plain English Definition
When part of your VA disability payment goes directly to a dependent (usually an estranged spouse or child) who isn't receiving support.
Why This Matters
If you're not supporting your dependents, they can request that the VA send part of your payment directly to them. The VA will investigate and decide whether to apportion your benefits.
Example
A veteran's estranged spouse files for apportionment because the veteran isn't providing support for their children. The VA may direct a portion of the veteran's monthly payment to the spouse.
