Plain English Definition
A medical opinion from a private doctor (not a VA examiner) supporting your claim. Often more detailed and favorable than C&P exam opinions.
Why This Matters
An IMO can be crucial when a C&P exam is negative or inadequate. Private doctors can take more time, review your full history, and write comprehensive opinions. The VA must consider IMOs as evidence.
Example
After an unfavorable C&P exam, you hire a private psychiatrist to review your records and write an IMO stating your PTSD is 'at least as likely as not' related to your combat service.
