Presumptive Condition

VA Terminology Definition

Plain English Definition

A condition the VA automatically assumes is service-connected if you served in certain locations or time periods. No need to prove the connection.

Why This Matters

Presumptive conditions make claims easier because you don't need a nexus letter. The VA presumes the service connection based on your service location or era (Vietnam, Gulf War, burn pits, etc.).

Example

Type 2 diabetes is presumptive for Vietnam veterans exposed to Agent Orange. If you served in Vietnam and have Type 2 diabetes, the VA presumes it's service-connected without requiring additional proof.
