Claim Shark

VA Terminology Definition

Plain English Definition

Unaccredited individuals or companies that charge veterans large fees to help with VA claims - often using predatory practices.

Why This Matters

Claim sharks are NOT accredited by the VA and often charge thousands of dollars for services that VSOs provide free. Some sign veterans up for high-interest loans or take percentages of back pay. Always verify accreditation at VA.gov before paying anyone.

Example

A company promises to 'guarantee' a 100% rating for $5,000 upfront. This is a claim shark. Legitimate VSOs and accredited attorneys don't charge upfront fees and are regulated by the VA.
