Goniometer

VA Terminology Definition

Plain English Definition

The protractor-like tool examiners use to measure joint range of motion in degrees during C&P exams.

Why This Matters

Goniometer measurements are crucial for musculoskeletal ratings. The examiner places the device on your joint and measures how far you can bend, extend, or rotate. These degree measurements directly correspond to rating percentages in the VASRD.

Example

During your knee exam, the examiner places a goniometer on your knee and asks you to bend it. They measure 110 degrees of flexion and document it on the DBQ form.
