Diagnostic Code
VA Terminology Definition
Plain English Definition
A 4-digit number assigned to your disability that determines how it's rated and what criteria apply.
Why This Matters
Every service-connected condition gets a diagnostic code from the VASRD. The code determines the rating criteria. Some conditions can be rated under multiple codes - the VA should use whichever gives you the highest rating.
Example
PTSD is rated under Diagnostic Code 9411. Knee limitation of motion uses Code 5260 (flexion) or 5261 (extension). Tinnitus is Code 6260.
