SMC (Special Monthly Compensation)
VA Terminology Definition
Plain English Definition
Additional compensation beyond your regular rating for severe disabilities like loss of limb, blindness, or needing aid and attendance.
Why This Matters
SMC is extra money on top of your regular disability payment. There are different levels (SMC-K, SMC-L, SMC-S, etc.) based on the type and severity of disability. Loss of use of a limb, erectile dysfunction, and being housebound can qualify.
Example
A veteran rated 100% for PTSD who also lost use of their hand in service receives their 100% payment PLUS an additional SMC-K payment each month for the loss of use.
