TDIU (Total Disability Individual Unemployability)

VA Terminology Definition

Plain English Definition

Getting paid at the 100% rate even if your combined rating is less than 100%, because your service-connected disabilities prevent you from working.

Why This Matters

If you can't hold a substantially gainful job due to your service-connected conditions, TDIU lets you receive 100% compensation. You typically need at least one condition rated 60%+ OR a combined rating of 70%+ with one condition at 40%+.

Example

A veteran has PTSD at 70% and can't maintain employment due to symptoms. Even though they're not rated at 100%, they qualify for TDIU and receive the same monthly payment as a 100% rated veteran.
