Combined Rating
VA Terminology Definition
Plain English Definition
When you have multiple disabilities, the VA combines them using a special formula - NOT by simple addition. This determines your total rating.
Why This Matters
The VA uses a 'combined ratings table' that accounts for the fact that multiple disabilities can't each reduce your function independently. The math is in your favor for lower ratings, against you for higher ones.
Example
A 50% rating plus a 30% rating doesn't equal 80%. Using the VA formula: 50% + 30% of remaining 50% = 50% + 15% = 65%, which rounds to 70%.
